A blog from the Bethel College Office of Culture and Belonging
Belonging is rarely a single moment.
It is something we grow into, often slowly. It takes shape through relationships, routines, questions, missteps, and care. For many of us at Bethel College, belonging has come in layers, shaped by who we are, when we arrived, and what we’ve learned along the way.
On Belonging is a storytelling space created by the Office of Culture and Belonging to reflect those layered experiences.
This blog is not meant to explain Bethel or define belonging in one particular way. Instead, it offers room to notice how belonging is experienced across campus and over time. Through stories and reflections, we hope to surface the ways students, faculty, staff, and alumni have found connection, navigated transition, and made meaning within this community.
Some stories will focus on arrival and acclimation. Others may reflect on moments of change, uncertainty, or growth. Still others will highlight the people, programs, or relationships that have helped individuals feel grounded here. Together, these narratives offer a fuller picture of what it means to live, learn, and work at Bethel.
At its heart, this blog is about listening:
- Listening to how people describe their own journeys.
- Listening for what helps community take root.
- Listening for what invites us to stay engaged with one another.
By sharing these stories, the Office of Culture and Belonging hopes to center lived experience without speaking for anyone else, foster understanding across difference, highlight the everyday work of connection that often goes unseen, and create a shared archive of how belonging has been shaped at Bethel.
On Belonging is an invitation to pause, reflect, and recognize that community is formed not all at once, but through time, care, and relationship.
